Primate Visions
Primates constitute Haraway ‘odd boundary creature’, which, with cyborgs and women have a ‘a destabilizing place in the great Western evolutionary, technological, and biological narratives.’ Writing the permeable and contingent line which distinguishes human being from our closest evolutionary relatives, Haraway opens up difficult social-material paradoxes inherent to modernity, tying the persistence of various structural injustices such as sexism and racism to the military and economic colonial tendencies in our science and industry. Haraway is able to forge valuable tools to help her readers meaningfully grapple with their predicament by grounding her analysis in a careful retelling of the rich history of apes and monkeys in the service of science.
