Working on the forefront of found footage filmmaking, German artists Christoph Girardet and Matthias Müller are being critically acclaimed both on the international festival circuit and in the artworld. In conjunction with their exhibition at West in Huis Huguetan, they introduce and discuss a program of individual and collaborative films. – In ‘Manual’ (2002), their painstakingly edited study of stimulus and response, the artist blend two genres – melodrama and science fiction film – juxtaposing magnified emotion with absolute detachment in doing so. Revolving around the blind spots between self-perception and the perception of others, the flickering images of ‘Contre-jour’ (2009) let the viewer experience blindness – and see what is not there. ‘Locomotive’ (2008) sets off on a phantom ride across some of the most frequently recurring topoi in the history of moving images by arranging train scenes from hundreds of feature films in a lush triple screen composition. While in Girardet's own ‘Dirigible’ (2012) images of airships are condensed into a deam-like narrative dealing with the shortcomings of real and cinematographic expeditions, Müller's diaristic ‘Album’ (2004) accompanies an invisible flaneur on his walk down memory lane.
