Het Gödel Escher Bach College is een serie lezingen, workshops, evenementen en video interviews, die West Den Haag in het kader van de tentoonstelling Gödel Escher Bach en in samenwerking met internationale partners organiseert. Elke editie heeft een ander thema.

In de eerste editie is de Canadese professor voor media studies, Richard Cavell te gast bij West Den Haag. Naar een korte introductie van Akiem Helmling over de tentoonstelling, zal Cavell een korte toelichting geven over zijn werk dat speciaal voor de expositie bij West geproduceerd is. Het werk 'Speechsong' is een fantasierijk onderzoek dat zich vanuit musicologie richt op de engima's van Arnold Schönberg en Glenn Gould, over zingen en spreken, Mozes en Aron, van technologie tot het bewustzijn van ons bestaan.
Vervolgens zal Richard Cavell door middel van een korte lezing de onderliggende samenhang van zijn werk, en het boek Gödel Escher Bach van Douglas Hofstadter geven.
Dr. Richard Cavell (CA) is professor of English at the University of British Columbia and has dedicated his academic research to an integrative approach to the study of culture. He is author of ‘McLuhan in Space: A Cultural Geography’ (University of Toronto Press, 2002), in which he focusses on the spatial turn in media studies arguing that space is the most consistent concept in McLuhans body of work. Professor Cavell has published the critical performance piece ‘Marinetti Dines with the High Command’ (Guernica Editions, 2014) and ‘Remediating McLuhan’ (Recursions, 2016) and is amongst others joint Founding Editor of the award-winning ‘Cultural Spaces’ series at the University of Toronto Press (1999-2009), founder of the UBC International Canadian Studies Center; a Founding Board Member of the UBC School of Journalism and curator of the website http://spectresofmcluhan.arts.ubc.ca. He has been a faculty member of the universities of Padua and Bologna
