Emile Van Helleputte
Unsound Body

Emile van Helleputte is a Belgian composer and performer, employing sound in a conceptual and critical way. His work questions the presentation of art objects and the context in which they are shown, and the authority the instrument itself may inspire. With a background in jazz music, Van Helleputte started experimenting with the different uses of the double bass. Through the preparation of his instrument, his interest in the theoretical background of musical instruments and scores grew, resulting in a more conceptual approach to performance and the shaping and sharing of musical experience.

In his own words about the piece: ‘Unsound Body is a composition for double bass, objects and a manual. The piece was composed in 2019 and can be performed by myself or someone else. The only condition is that the performer is a somewhat trained double bass player; it should be obvious that s/he is used to handling the instrument.

The piece starts from the basis that playing the instrument is first and foremost based on movements. The use of the word ‘manual’ instead of score emphasises this. The manual only shows the different movements; the notes or intended sounds are not mentioned. The manual allows an interpretation of different movements and how these movements produce sound.’

About the series: No View, The Radio
The arts are taking a break. Theaters, museums, concert halls and galleries are closed. To a large extent, the art that is so desperately needed right now is inaccessible. Imagine being quarantined at home without films, without books, without music. Though we may not access the art, we can still think about it. The enforced rupture of this isolation can also be an opportune moment to reflect on and from, the arts. Every Friday for the upcoming weeks we will showcase original musical works by different artists, selected by Alex Andropoulos.
