West is proud to present a solo exhibition of Harmen de Hoop (1959) De Hoop has recently shown his work in Groningen, Berlin, Eindhoven and Montreal. Four years ago he showed an overview in The Hague with a large exhibition at Stroom of works made in urban surroundings.

De Hoop examines conventions in the society, mainly outside the exhibition space. Specific spots in public space are anonymously manipulated. De Hoop is moving objects, people and animals whereby the interpretation of the (conditioned) surroundings becomes different. Earlier De Hoop has painted outlines of a basketball field on a parking lot, placed a coat rack on a tramstop and restored a used pedestrians crossing place. Occasional tresspassers could doubt reality while confronted by these absurd situations. Is it not strange that a child plays football on a small flight hillock with grass? Or what is the usefulness of a fire extinguishing attached to an information board? Are balloons tied up on a 'ready made' statue art?
These interventions in the urban surroundings are not always easily recognizable as art. But in the context of the exhibition space the images of these interventions and manipulations become irrevocable recognizable as art. Art which assumes an idea and refers to the space. Where De Hoop, very frequently casually, gives criticism on town planners, architects and others.

In his first solo exhibition at West De Hoop shows his most recent work. 'New Nature Reserves' are new proposals which De Hoop has made for the future for spots from the past. For the first time De Hoop is using the technique of photomontage. He is not obstructed by 'reality' and plays with place and time. Startingpoint are photos of important locations which fictitiously form a new habitat for several particular animals. 'The Animal Liberation Front' has as an aim to effectively use resources (time and money) to end the 'property' status of not-human animals. The point of view of the group ALF is the main point for work in which De Hoop links again animals with locations. But these are, in contrast to more earlier work, not completely developed ideas but visualisations of 'direct' actions. Several photos show the step by step release of captured animals.
