Hans Clevers & Ramsey Nasr

Hans Clevers (1957) is geneticus, arts en president van de Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen (KNAW). Hij is als hoogleraar immunologie verbonden aan het Universitair Medisch Centrum Utrecht. Hij deed baanbrekend onderzoek naar het ontstaan van darmkanker. Sinds 2002 is hij hoogleraar moleculaire genetica aan het UMC Utrecht.

Van 2002 tot 2012 was Hans Clevers directeur van het voor Ontwikkelingsbiologie en Stamcelonderzoek van de KNAW, waar hij tot en met mei 2012 de onderzoeksgroep WNT Signaling and Cancer leidde. De wetenschapper ontdekte dat er vele overeenkomsten bestaan tussen de normale vernieuwing van darmweefsel en het ontstaan van darmkanker. Per 1 juni 2012 is hij de opvolger van als president van de KNAW. Onder zijn leiding ontstond bij de KNAW in 2014 de Akademie van Kunsten. Daarnaast is Clevers honorary professor aan de Central South University in Changsha, Hunan, China.

Clevers heeft een tiental patenten op zijn naam staan en was betrokken bij de oprichting van de biotechnologiebedrijven Ubisys (CEO: Ton Logtenberg, Ubisys fuseerde later met Introgene tot Crucell), Semaia Pharmaceuticals (overgenomen door Hybrigenics SA) en Agamyxis BV. Hij was tot 2012 ook wetenschappelijk adviseur van investeringsmaatschappijen Life Science Partners en Aglaia Biomedical Ventures en van Eclipse Therapeutics in San Diego. De wetenschapper ontving diverse, prestigieuze prijzen en onderscheidingen en werd benoemd tot Chevalier in het Franse Legion d'Honneur en Ridder in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw.

Hans Clevers (1957) is a geneticist and doctor and he is president of The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). He is a professor in immunology at the University Medical Centre Utrecht. He carried out ground-breaking research into the onset of intestinal cancer. Since 2002 he has been professor in molecular genetics at the UMC Utrecht.

Ramsey Nasr (1974) is dichter, schrijver, acteur en regisseur. In zijn vele artikelen en opiniestukken laat Nasr zich kennen als een man met vele passies. Naast liefde voor kunst – klassieke muziek, toneel, poëzie – is er ook een grote betrokkenheid bij de hedendaagse politiek, zowel nationaal als internationaal. Een verzamelbundel van Nasrs poëzie verscheen in 2009 onder de titel Tussen lelie en waterstofbom. Afgezien van zijn literaire werk is Nasr een begenadigd acteur en regisseur – hij was verbonden aan het Zuidelijk Toneel, maakte solovoorstellingen en is te zien in films en tv-series. Naast zijn eigen theatermonologen regisseert Nasr ook muziektheater. In 2009 werd hij voor vier jaar benoemd tot Dichter des Vaderlands. Voor de bundel Mijn nieuwe vaderland. Gedichten van crisis en angst, die inspeelt op de relatie tussen kunst en cultuur en de Nederlandse politiek ontving hij de E. du Perronprijs 2011. Met Hier komt de poëzie!, een 7-cd-box met een persoonlijke keuze uit de Nederlandstalige poëzie koos hij een nieuwe vorm om een breder publiek te bereiken. In 2013 kreeg Nasr de Gouden Ganzenveer uitgereikt en behoort hij tot de vaste spelerskern van Toneelgroep Amsterdam.

Ramsey Nasr (1974) is a poet, writer, actor and director. In 2009, he was appointed as Dichter des Vaderlands (Dutch Poet Laureate) for four years. For his book of poetry ‘Mijn nieuwe vaderland. Gedichten van crisis en angst’ (For my new fatherland. Poems of crisis and fear), which anticipates the relationship between art and culture and Dutch politics, he received the E. du Perron prize 2011. In 2013, Nasr was awarded the Gouden Ganzenveer. He forms part of the fixed core of actors of Toneelgroep Amsterdam.

‘What is the use of this for society?’ Increasingly, artists and scientists are confronted with this question. During the past centuries, art and science have gradually acquired a more and more autonomous position, but at this moment it seems as if a turning-point has been reached. Sciences, for instance, are ordered to focus on topics that have a great importance for society and the arts are asked to demonstrate their social relevance. At the same time, it is apparent that arts and sciences are increasingly working together. In this series, renowned artists and scientists engage in conversation with each other. What is the relationship between art and science? How do both these domains observe their social position? What are the motives of scientists and artists and what role does creativity play? How important is room to fail? What is the value of fundamental research and autonomous art? What is the current situation regarding artistic freedom and the freedom of science?
These and other questions serve as a guideline in this series of meetings, during which we reflect on the social role of both worlds and their mutual relationship.

This programme is a co-operation between Studium Generale Leiden University, the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (Lectorate Art Theory & Practice), the Academy of Creative and Performing Arts of Leiden University, West Den Haag, and Paard van Troje.
