Marileen Dogterom & Francine Houben

Marileen Dogterom (1967) is voorzitter Bionanoscience aan de TU Delft en hoogleraar biofysica aan de Universiteit Leiden. Dogterom is wetenschappelijk koploper in de biofysica van het cytoskelet: de microbuisjes die biologische cellen hun karakteristieke vorm en functie geven. Ze beweegt zich in de voorhoede van de biomimetica en wordt alom gezien als expert in de celbiofysica.

Marileen Dogterom (1967) is president of the Department of Bionanoscience at the TU Delft and professor in biophysics at Leiden University. Dogterom is the scientific leader in the biophysics of the cytoskeleton: the micro tubes that provide the characteristic form and function of biological cells. She is in the vanguard of biomimetics and is widely recognized as expert in cell biophysics.

Francine Houben (1955), creatief directeur van Mecanoo, is een van de weinige wereldberoemde vrouwelijke architecten. Houben heeft een breed oeuvre, variërend van theaters, musea en bibliotheken tot woonwijken en parken. In Birmingham staat de door haar ontworpen grootste bibliotheek van Europa.

Haar visie op architectuur legde ze vast in het manifest Compositie, Contrast, Complexiteit (2001). In Dutch Mountains (2011) doet ze verslag van haar leven als internationaal werkend architect aan de hand van acht bijzondere projecten. Houben was hoogleraar mobiliteitsesthetiek aan de TU Delft en doceerde aan Harvard University. Ze was directeur/curator van de Eerste Internationale Architectuur Biënnale Rotterdam. Sinds 2010 is Houben lid van de Akademie der Künste in Berlijn.

Ze staat als enige Nederlander op de Debrett's lijst van meest invloedrijke mensen in Groot-Brittannië, waarin haar onconventionele benadering van architectuur wordt geroemd.

Francine Houben (1955) is creative director of architectural firm Mecanoo. Houben has a wide oeuvre, varying from theatres, museums and libraries to housing estates and parks. In Birmingham you can find the largest library of Europe, designed by her. Houben has been a professor in mobility of aesthetics at the TU Delft and lectured at Harvard University. She has been director/curator of the First International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam.

Andrea van Pol is redacteur en presentator. Sinds 2012 maakt zij met Roland Duong en Teun van de Keuken het VPRO-programma ‘De slag om Nederland’.

Andrea van Pol is both editor and presenter. Since 2012, she has been making the VPRO programme ‘De slag om Nederland’ together with Roland Duong and Teun van de Keuken.

‘What is the use of this for society?’ Increasingly, artists and scientists are confronted with this question. During the past centuries, art and science have gradually acquired a more and more autonomous position, but at this moment it seems as if a turning-point has been reached. Sciences, for instance, are ordered to focus on topics that have a great importance for society and the arts are asked to demonstrate their social relevance. At the same time, it is apparent that arts and sciences are increasingly working together. In this series, renowned artists and scientists engage in conversation with each other. What is the relationship between art and science? How do both these domains observe their social position? What are the motives of scientists and artists and what role does creativity play? How important is room to fail? What is the value of fundamental research and autonomous art? What is the current situation regarding artistic freedom and the freedom of science?
These and other questions serve as a guideline in this series of meetings, during which we reflect on the social role of both worlds and their mutual relationship.
